Walrus Social House

An icon can’t be manufactured, it can’t be copied. Such is the destination of Surfers Paradise. Built by legends that are fast becoming folklore, this eclectic beach town owes its international reputation to those who flew in the face of those who said, ‘’it can’t be done’’.

Enter…the Walrus

Alcohol wasn’t easy to come by in these parts back in the mid-1800s, so a foolhardy yet enterprising ‘Bosun’, James Stewart, went about setting this straight. Through genius ingenuity and iron, he hand-built a floating rum distillery aboard an old paddle wheeler steamship he lovingly named, SS Walrus. James and his Walrus sailed the Nerang River distilling local folks’ sugar cane into prized Walrus Rum for three years keeping spirits high onshore while giving customs officers a rum-for-their-money trying to account for all the gallons produced!

From the golden fields of cane, a legend was born. Walrus Social House is a tribute to James and his trusty SS Walrus. This is why we are a heritage-inspired establishment built on traditional sugar cane earth that bore the fruits of the Walrus stills – the very steamship moored in the Nerang River on our back doorstep. This is why we are bringing back the social decency of sharing good drinks and fare with good people. Being community. Being entertained. Breathing in life. Breathing out worries. Living in the moment. As James would want us to.

Walrus Social House and Bar

Like the SS Walrus and its ingenious ‘Bosun’ James Stewart who produced fine rum for coastal locals, we’re all about keeping spirits high in a legendary town that’s famous for fun.

We’ve got over 25 rums from around the world to choose from, over 70 spirits to savour, 60 odd wines on the list and imported, local and craft beers on tap or by the bottle. Spoilt for choice is a gross understatement.

Our sixteen heritage-based Signature Cocktails keep tradition alive dedicated to iconic people, places and events that have shaped the Gold Coast over the past 150 years. The White Shoe Shuffle, Barney Bolton, Stafford’s Punch and Spray Tan Man are just some of the refreshingly delicious creations to savour as the sun goes down.

Open every day from 10 am till late, the Walrus Social House gaming room offers 35 of the latest gaming machines, including the interactive 'Lightning-Link', 'Jackpot Carnival' and a variety of other in-house jackpots for your experience. Walrus Social House promotes responsible gambling. If gambling becomes a problem please call the Gambling Helpline on 1800 858 858. • White Shoe Shuffle

A flash in the distance gleaming from the equinox of a summer sun. From a hundred yards away they pace with duck-like determination. Men who built a city by the sea instantly recognisable for doing so by their shared love of donning arctic white leather shoes. A symbol of status. A statementthat I mean business, White Shoe Brigade style. This one's smooth and silky like a Surfers property salesman of the 70s.

  • Barney Bolton

Legendary boat builder, hirer and ferry man Barney Boulton called the GC home in the late 1880's after emigrating from England. Famous with locals and Brisbanites, the jovial skipper ferried beachgoers across the Broadwater from Southport to Main Beach. So lovable, when he'd head north to Brisbane and walk the city barefoot, people would call out, “How they biting Barney?!” A cocktail with a sweet yet salty bite.

  • Stafford’s Punch

In our beautiful sunburnt country, where would Australian women of today be without the bikini? Enter Paula Stafford, the dazzling Gold Coast beauty and fashion designer credited with introducing the bikini to Australian shores in her own backyard of Surfers Paradise. Against conservative criticism she persisted with punch to make this swimwear the preferred beach fashion statement during the 40s and 50s - the rest is now history. A taste with vision, this one's for Paula.
